Phú Quốc

Each year around this time the dazzling beautiful island of Phú Quốc is dedicated to the harvest of the famous Phú Quốc pepper. It ends in March. It is currently the dry season on the island, which, however photogenic and heavenly this may be, also experiences a sometimes relentless rainy season. Last August, for example, 1000 mm of water fell on the island in just a couple of days! More than ever, a third of what normally falls in a whole year. No casualties were reported, fortunatelly, but for many residents life was turned upside down. Just like in Jakarta, parts of the island flooded due to irresponsible economic development (tourism, business activity) and waste in the urban regions and the tourist high-spots.

A shriller contrast is unthinkable with nature conservation and sustainable pepper cultivation on the mountainous, wooded island. At the end of the year we already announced how happy we were with the long-awaited arrival of 2018 Phú Quốc pepper. This month is a great momentum to get acquainted with this 'hard to get', which may get European protection this year, just like the delicious nuoc mâm (fish sauce) from the island, earlier in 2016. Both are absolute musts!
